The Trout-Tree Restaurant

The Northern Kenya Tour Circuit’s newest attraction is located less than 100 metres off the main Kiganjo-Nanyuki Road on the Burguret River. The Trout-Tree grows in the TamTrout fish farm (across from the Mountain Rock Hotel), 2.5 hours travel from Nairobi city centre and just 3 km from the Nanyuki airstrip.

Built in and around a huge Mugumo (Sacred Fig) tree, the Trout-Tree Restaurant serves char-grilled trout as fresh as it gets… right over the trout ponds. Two troops of Colobus monkeys are resident at the farm and the sound of constantly rushing water from the fish ponds under the restaurant further complement the meal - a full sensory feast.

The washrooms are on terra firma next to the beautifully landscaped entrance and are constructed to four-star standards - with a rustic flair. We know what’s needed when you leave that tour vehicle: first impressions count, as do the second and the third and……

With seating for 60 in cool arboreal splendour, the restaurant offers a three-course meal of home-baked bread, a selection of starters including farm-smoked trout and our trout chowder soup, a choice of trout, beef or vegetarian main course with vegetables, served on a mahogany platter, together with a crisp green salad, followed by mountain fruit salad and tea or coffee. We use only eco-friendly “Chardust” briquettes in our charcoal grills.

Be warned though; there may be one problem associated with your visit to the Trout-Tree – finding the enthusiasm to get back on the road!

You can’t miss our road sign. Karibu!
