Kasigau Conservancy lies in the foothills of the towering 3000 feet Mt. Kasigau, which is itself saddled in the ecologically significant elephant migratory corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, Kenya. It is in the heart of the 52,000 acres community owned Kasigau Ranch;- a swathing wilderness of a dry bush and scrubland patrolled by the majestic African Elephants, buffaloes, zebras, gazelles, lions, hyenas among other game. The communities predominantly of Taita tribe reside in the five villages around the mountain.
Finch Travels Ltd is partnering with this community through the Kasigau Trust.
Today, this initiative has seen the setting aside of a conservancy where active wildlife management is practiced. Kasigau being large (52,000 acres) and diverse, offers the greatest and realistically viable opportunity for wildlife conservation and management in perpetuity.
Already a 12 bed ecolodge is on its final stages of completion with each of the rooms tastefully designed using traditional local knowledge and materials. Named Kiwanjani Lodge, the exclusive hide away is an elegant beauty in the middle of Tsavo wilderness and is set to open its doors in June 2010.
Recently, Kasigau Trust, with the assistance of Slovak aid, Pontis Foundation and Microsoft Inc. donated twenty computers and two printers to Moi High School Kasigau. The computers were all networked and connected with internet; a first ever such a venture in the area. The project was launched on the 20th February in a glamorous occasion graced by the area MP. Dan Mwazo, Kenya Wildlife Officials, Ministry of Education officials and members of the local community. Plans are underway to spread this programme to most of the schools in the area.
Kasigau is aiming at a model that will be different; a model not based on communities but led by communities.
