Maralal Safari Lodge is situated in the Maralal Game
Sanctuary three kilometers west of Maralal
Township. The lodge is
signposted from the roundabout on arrival in Maralal. It is of course; the
staging post for road visits to loiyangalani on Lake
Turkana some 225 km (140 miles) north.
There is a township airstrip (about 10 km from the lodge)
and another at Kisima suitable for larger aircraft, some 20 km south of the
township. Maralal is approximately 350 km (215 miles) from Nairobi via Nyahururu. Maralal to Lake Baringo
(via the new road) is about 160 km (100 miles) and Maralal to Isiolo
approximately 185 km (115 miles).
Facilities
20 double rooms, 14 of which have a separate loft area set
with a third bed, all in twin room chalets. Each bedroom has a sitting area
around the fireplace. There are verandahs on most rooms, shaving socket in
every bathroom, Swimming Pool and Pool Bar. The public areas house a dining
room seating 70 persons. Reserved Resident’s Lounge and Game Viewing Verandah,
cocktail terrace with pergola, Upgraded Cuisine, small conference room and
Curio Shop.
Game Viewing
Daily visitors are impala, zebra, baboon, warthog and eland.
In the neighbourhood game walks can be arranged from the lodge. Game includes
seasonal elephant, jackal, leopard, hyena and plains game.
There are no fees for entering the sanctuary. Game comes to
the waterhole and salt lick in front of the lodge.
Guided Bird Walks
The Greater Maralal area is rich in birdlife. The East
African Ornithological Society records over 250 bird species in the vicinity,
including two of Africa’s rarest birds. In the
Maralal Sanctuary itself over 60 varieties of birds regularly visit us, and the
Plains Game is always there.
Other Activities
- The
Rift Valley viewpoint at Losiolo (World’s End about 30 km from the lodge)
is a spectacle not to be missed. Nor should you miss a visit to the
‘frontier’ township where a flourishing market offers Turkana dolls and
artifacts from the Samburu and Turkana people.
- There
is marvelous walking in the adjacent forest, game / bird walks with our
game rangers.
- Visit
to Samburu Manyatta including a working blacksmith and herbalist.
- Samburu
Dancing and cultural show can be arranged. Short camel rides or longer
camel treks can be also organized.
- Visit
to the house where Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was detained, now a museum of
historical significance.
- On a
longer stay guests should take the opportunity of visiting Baragoi. The
area is also of interest (beryl, petrified wood etc.) to “rock-hounds”.
- If time permits we recommend a half day game drive on
Mugie Ranch (60 km) to see Lion and Cheetah, Elephant and Buffalo.
