A Weekend Away at Kigio Wildlife Conservancy
Fancy a special getaway retreat surrounded by wildlife? On a weekend away from the capital city of Nairobi, visit this impressive natural retreat that holds a variety of our wildlife. This place is one of a kind experience that will leave you refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to face any challenges thrown at you.
The Kigio Wildlife Conservancy is a vast 3500 acre land lying between Nakuru and Naivasha. Kigio is approximately 120 km from Nairobi just before Giligil.
This beautiful conservancy has a wide ranging habitat and holds an approximate of 3500 heads of wildlife. Originally a cattle ranch, this conservancy was put up to protect and preserve our habitat which faced threats from humans and other external factors.
The Game Drives
This is a place where you can get close to wildlife by taking a game drive or even guided nature walks. There is plenty of game as you drive around; impalas can be seen grazing in the bush and the open plains in their hundreds. You are also assured of seeing hundreds of zebras also grazing, trotting or just lying around.
The naturalists here will only be too glad to give you all the information you need to know about them.
Another animal found here is the eland. This cow like animal is the world’s largest antelope and is the animal most depicted in the early rock art of East Africa. Up to date elands still hold an important place in the mythology of many African tribes.
The Rothschild giraffe once endangered but not yet out of this list also has its home here. Protected by an electric fence and favorable environment, these giraffes thrive here and from the look of things, the number is slowly increasing.
Did you know that a giraffe is very protective of its young? Looking at this tall mammals walking majestically and feeding is an enriching and delightful encounter.
From the comfort of your car you get to see these animals up close as they don’t shy away from vehicles. But as common sense dictates, you are not allowed to get out of your vehicle even though the animals may look gentle and harmless.
Hundreds of warthogs mingle and move around the conservancy and when found gathered in their numbers at one place make a lovely sight.
Eco-Tourism
Kigio Wildlife Conservancy is at the forefront of ecotourism in the Rift Valley lakes area. It is such a rich conservancy that follows the need to create a base from where people from all walks of life could make a stop over, refresh themselves, get accommodation and of course enjoy nature.
Malewa Wildlife Lodge thus came to being. Set within a glorious yellow fever tree woodland, this striking lodge is indeed exotic and very nice. The Malewa River which calmly flows downwards next door is an attraction for over 250 species of exotic birds.
Once a rudimentary lodge, it has been transformed to a stunning luxury ecolodge incorporating a dramatic architectural style and traditional African building methods and concepts. A dramatic structure at the entrance to the lodge is a soaring mud shaft chimney that exemplifies the creativity of the designer.
After an exhilarating game drive, you can get accommodation in the individual and traditional styled buildings. These suites with stunning views stand on stilts all offering spacious bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms within an acacia forest filled with wildlife.
The serenity and the quietness of this place truly makes it very unique more so for honeymooners and people seeking a place of solitude and still have a chance to be within close proximity of wildlife.
With such environmental friendly conscious settings on this special retreat, you can enjoy all encompassing nature and spirit. Other activities such as fishing are also possible at the Malewa River. All in all, this is one place where you can have a very worthy wildlife and nature experience.
From this place you can also arrange excursions to the nearby Lake Naivasha and Nakuru.
