Top 10 Checks before making a road trip.

Now that you have selected that must-visit destination, you enjoy adventure and are not afraid of some unknowns. What better way to spend your vacation than by taking a road trip with family or friends through beautiful country to that wonderful place? Organizing and driving on your own safari does not always mean that it's is going to be tough. Plan your trip well to make sure that it is fulfilling. As you prepare for departure check out the following essential preps before you embark on the road trip.

1. Get to know your destination.
To fully experience what a destination has to offer, you need to understand the cool spots and attractions, facilities, the people and some of the local’s favourite places to eat or hangout. This leads to appreciation that can completely make or break your trip.

2. Buy a route map.
Use this to note the main route features e.g. major intersections, towns, river crossings, lakes, mountains etc. They will form good reference points along the way towards your destination.

3. Understand the lay of the land.
Determine distances in kilometers, alternative routes and the terrain. Knowing the distance enables you to establish the likely travel time at a reasonable speed and fuel you will consume. Most destinations are accessible by more than one route thus alternative routes and all terrain vehicles are advisable.

4. Get a mechanically sound car.
Leave nothing to chance, make sure you have or rent a well serviced 4x4 vehicle with reliable good tyres, sturdy suspensions, spare wheel, jack and spanner, a valid road licence and insurance documents from a reputable car hire company. Car break downs are frustrating due to time constraints and exposes you to dangers like highway robberies.

5. Plan your accommodation at the destination.
Choose your accommodation carefully. There is variety; from hotels, lodges, resorts, tented camps or pitch your own tent at basic self-catering campsites. Make sure it is at a safe spot and do adhere to the regulations if any are stipulated.

6. Budget for the trip.
Set aside a reasonable budget for the trip which gives you more options, flexibility and confidence. Reconfirm that everything is fine by going through your checklist of essentials.

7. Consider getting a guide.
The idea of getting around in a unknown place, with strange people possibly speaking a strange language can be quite unnerving. This calls for a guide who with their experience not only will they be able to guide you towards the best sighting but will also give you some valuable information on what ever it is that you are looking at..

8. Get ready for the fare.
There are chances you will be eating out at local eateries. It is advisable to know the signature dishes of the locals and get to know what to try and avoid.

9. Research the tourist seasons.
Africa is a great destination all year round. Each season has its advantages, and each area has its best moments in terms of prices and attractions.

10. Predict the weather.
Check out weather reports on your destination then plan appropriately for the conditions anticipated.

Hey! This is a moment for awesome adventures, loads of laughs and time to make memories. Remember to pack your ipod with your favourite road-trip tunes to sing your hearts out to while on the long haul.

For those who plan and execute the plan well, the trip is likely to be fun, enjoyable, comfortable, safe, fulfilling and relaxing. Have a safe trip!
